History of Lake Orr Redirect
|
|
 |
Lake Orr and Lake Azzurra are both man made and are the result of a convergence of Reedy Creek and an un-named creek coming in from Robina at the western end of Lake Orr.
Interesting facts about these lakes include:
- semi tidal and is a mixture of salt and fresh water
- Bond Uni Weir controls the tidal flows by mechanical gates thereby reducing the volume of water travelling in and out of the canal system which in turn reduces the amount of erosion further downstream
- Lake Orr was constructed between 1986 and 1989 by Bond Corporation as part of the Bond University development
- It was named after Brian Orr, the supervising architect for the lake
- Water was introduced into Lake Azzurra in December 2002 through a pipe
- Delfin moved around 1 million cubic metres of dirt to create Lake Azzurra and completed the western end of Lake Orr
- The base of the lake in mostly clay and the lake supports approximately 1,500 marine species including travalli, bass, crabs, and quite possibly bull sharks
- The main contaminates getting into the lake are silt, litter and fertilizers
- The lake has a number of gross pollutant traps and wetlands designed to remove these contaminants as best as possible
- Delfin monitor the water quality monthly and after every significant rain event and this will continue until the lake is handed over the Council
- Because the water quality can not be guaranteed, swimming in the lake is prohibited
- The lake has a very shallow ledge around it for safety and this allows anyone (including a toddler) to be able to stand up should they fall in and due to this ledge, diving is prohibited
- Generally the depth of the lake varies significantly between around 2m and 6m in places
- This 2m depth also includes the areas under the bridges, giving further reason to not dive or jump off the bridges
- Boating activities on the lake are currently limited to a speed limit of 6 knots
